Mark Freeland, former Head of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC, joined Hartswood Films on 20th June this year.
Over the three years that Freeland was at the BBC, he was responsible for a wide
range of Independent productions including "The Worst Week Of My Life", "The Big Impression",
"The Lenny Henry Show", "Carrie and Barry", "QI", "Early Doors", "Catherine Tate", "The Keith
Barret Show", "Nighty Night", "The Mighty Boosh", "Shirley Ghostman" and Hartswood's upcoming
Australian co-production "Supernova".
Beryl Vertue, Hartswood's CEO, said: "I am delighted and excited that Mark is joining the
Hartswood team. He is very talented, with real editorial flair, particularly for comedy, which
forms an important part of Hartswood's output. His expertise, enthusiasm and attitude when
dealing with writers and talent have earned him much respect in the industry, which I believe
will encourage even more creative talent to come and work with Hartswood. We are a real family
company with
Sue Vertue producing and
Debbie Vertue as General Manager. We have known Mark for
many years so I know we already have a strong rapport with him."
Freeland says "This has been a really tough decision for me. My time at the BBC has been
unbelievably creative, challenging and rewarding. At every level I have worked with unique and
talented people from whom I have learned a great deal. However I felt I could not turn down the
chance to join Hartswood Films, and have the opportunity to develop and produce with the Vertues
across a range of television genres, especially comedy.
"Because of Hartswood's programming track record, the way in which they work with writers, their
business outlook and ambitions, when it comes to moving from commissioning to producing, I can
think of no better destination. It is a place I sincerely hope will continue to contribute
significantly to the creative future of the BBC. I am excited to be at Hartswood to help make it
happen. During my time at the BBC, working with the Independent production community, I have been
involved with some truly inspiring people - I feel it's now time to go and try to be one of those people."
Jane Lush, commented: "Mark has been a fantastic asset to the BBC's Comedy team and leaves a legacy
of bold and original programmes. He has always championed the very best ideas and the most brilliant
talent. We at the BBC are delighted that we will continue to work together in his new role at Hartswood."
